Ms. Tiber has had frequent bouts of bronchitis. Her provider tells her that this disorder has caused some COPD.
1.
What measures would you teach her to make breathing easier?
2. Why is it important to be cautious in giving oxygen to a patient
with COPD? What might happen?
Q1
The measures that will makes her easy in breathing are
- avoid stranrous work or activitites because breathlessness are more during exercise.
- place the patient in fowler position
- cough out the secretion as much as possible
- teach the breathing exercise like purse lips breathing, deep breathing exercise
- For pursed lips breathing, advice to take a deep inhaled through nose then hold it for two second and release it through mouth with lip pursing the lips.
- For deep breathing exercise, asked the patient to take a deep breath through the nose and then hold it. Then again release the air from the nose again.
Q2
Answer: for the COPD patient, the oxygen administration should be very less as much as possible. Around 28% of oxygen only can be given. It is because COPD patient is having already high carbondioxide level. When oxygen is administered it help to remove from the hypoxemia but it leads to increase more carbondioxide in the body, apnea and at last respiratory failure. So, the health care workers should be careful for giving the oxygen to the COPD patient.
