6. What is an addition reaction?
a. What type of starting materials are used for addition reactions?
(functional group)
b. What type of reagents are used for addition reactions?
1)The addition reaction is a reaction in which two or more simpler reactants combine to form a single product. All the atoms that are presented in the reactants must be there in the product. The addition reaction can be electrophilic or nucleophilic. An electrophile will add on the more electron rich centre whereas the nucleophile will add on the electron deficient centre.
2) Unsaturated hydrocarbons in which there are double bonds undergo addition reactions to form the saturated products,So we can say that alkenes and alkynes undergo electrophilic addition while the carbonyl functional groups will undergo nucleophilic addition reaction.
3) Reagents such as H2 with nickel/palladium as catalyst will undergo addition reaction on alkenes or alkynes.Other reagents include for alkens and alkynes are HCl . Peracids are also used for addition reaction such as epoxidation reactions.Similarly for nucleophilic additions we have reagents like HCN or ETOH etc.
