ECT:

In Electroconvulsive therapy, tiny electric currents passes through the brain which triggers a seizure in the presence of general anesthesia. ECT is usually opted when other treatments fail and ones the entire treatment is completed.

Advantages of ECT:

  • When old people cannot bear the side effects of medication, ECT can be effective.
  • It is also used during pregnancy when other medications cannot be used.

Disadvantages of ECT:

  • After the treatment, the patient might face confusion which might last for sometime and at times for years.
  • People might experience headache, nausea and many other physical side effects.
  • It might increase heart rate and blood pressure.

VNS: When people are not responsive to anti-seizure drugs, VNS can be effective.

Advantages of VNS:

It reduces the frequency of seizures

it helps in controling symptoms of depression.

Disadvantages of VNS:

  • It has some risk factors for people who had to undergo surgery like pain, Infection
  • Trouble in swallowing

TMS:

Transcranial magnetic stimulation helps in improving the symptoms of depression by stimulating the nerve cells. TMS is mostly used when other depression treatments are not successful.

Advantages of TMS:

It is non-invasive.

There is no need of medication.

There is no side effects.

Disadvantages of TMS:

  • Skin rashes
  • Anxiety issues
  • Headache.
