Discussion - Ethical Nursing Pr
Explain the difference between legal and ethical nursing practice.
The difference between legal standards and ethical standards is the fact that the legal standards are set forth in governmental laws. All the statutes and laws point to are legal standards. However, the ethical standards, based on human principles of right and wrong don't necessarily have a legal basis i.e. they are based on the concept of moral imperatives. Things that are legal in a state may be illegal and legal things may be considered unethical. Physician aid in dying (PAD), i.e. Euthanasia or assisted suicide, is legal in the states of Washington DC, California, but illegal in other states of the USA such as Montana. However, Euthanasia may be considered as unethical according to the Kantian ethics.
