Solutions

Expert Solution

The case study doesn't talk much about the motivation of the HPE employees at individual level. So the motivation level of individual employees can't be analysed.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation:

Intrinsic motivation is that urge to improve or excel or be better version of oneself that comes from within the individual. When no external force is required to inspire or motivate a person, that person is said to be a self-motivator of intrinsic motivated person.

On the other hand, if a person needs external help to keep going or to push him, whether it is some psychologist or a motivational speaker or expectation or instructions of others, then the person is said to be extrinsic motivated person.

Maslow Model of Needs and Motivation:

This model is a pyramidal classification of human needs with each level representing one level of needs. It classifies all the needs in 5 groups, namely:

1. Physiological Needs,

2. Safety Needs,

3. Social Needs,

4. Self-esteem Needs,

5. Self-actualisation Needs.

Maslow states that unless or until the needs at a particular level are fulfilled, the need above in hierarchy than that level won’t motivate an individual. And once a level is achieved, the needs at that or any level below that level fails to motivate an individual thereafter.

The success of any company is dependent on the success of small teams within the organisation and a positive synergy between the teams and smooth functioning with proper coordination and communication taking place.

The success of HPE is clearly a result of excellence of its all teams together, whether it be the Customer dealing team or tax team or R&D team or market analysis team or visionaries or top level management; to make a company of a size as large as HPE, it requires cohesion and adhesiveness between all groups and teams.

Group characteristics that may have unfolded during HPE’s teams formation:

· Classification by expertise: A team is formed by combining two or more people with similar objectives and skill sets.

· Intra-group Conflicts: A Group deals with various inter-group conflicts that lead to decreased efficiency of a group in short run, but if dealt constructively, it will lead to diverse perspectives and innovative approaches for organisation

· Inter-group Conflicts: Competition within groups can be a dual edged sword for an organisation. While it may lead to enhancing performance of both the competing parties, it may also lead to destructive synergies with in the organisation.

· Perception biases: While making a team bring diverse skills sets together, it also leads to attracting biases and friction among individuals.
