Learning English with full academic proficiency is difficult. It is bery important to judge the level of the learner and treat him/ her according to that. Instructions play a very important role in helping to learn. These are divided on the basis of the levels of the students and are called instruction strategies. This is so because the trainer needs to strategise how to treat the people from various proficiency levels in order to make learning easy and academic for them. There are 5 levels of instruction strategies.

Pre emergent instructional strategies- in the pre emergent stage a learner doesnt know English and speaks only a few sentences. It is followed by imitation and small responses as well as identifying the images, graphs etc. the instructions need to be very clear as the learner doesnt know english. The strategies are to make it easy for the learner to progress. Some of them include hand gestures, trying to explain in the learners native language, pointing at things, starting from basics, explaining the meaning of the new words etc.

Emergent instructional strategies- emergent stage is the early stage. In this the learner starts to make sounds and speak words but is still below basic level. In this stage the instructor needs to be calm with the responses as aggression can lead to demotivated responses. Motivating words like try , yes etc should be used and the learner should be appreciated for his effort. Some strategies are making small responses like yes or no , asking the student to make complete sentences, using more handcgestures etc.

Basic instructional strategies- at this level the learner understands simple speech and tends to speak more . He also recognises the repetitive words and patterns. The strategies involve focusing more on the learner. The teacher tries to ask wuestions like what is this, how will we do this etc. she also needs to be attentive and see what the child is doing and correct the mistakes politely. The learner is asked to make sentences and speak them aloud as per a strategy of this level.

Intermediate instructional strategies- in this level the child can understand the complex sentences and phrases which are used in daily life and will be able to produce them but might make some grammatical and vocabulary mistakes. The main focus should be that the student enhances academic english as he is in the intermediate level. The strategies would be in line with this objective. The trainer needs to try and generate responses from the learner and explore the alternatives as well as the logics behind it. Also the trainer should encourage the learner to use and make complex sentences and identify new vocabulary.

Advanced instructional strategies- in the dvance level the learner is able to speak and produce academic english with small errors in the vocabulary and organisation. They can also understand the comprehensions. The main focus of the instructional strategies should be to improve the mistakes in vocab, organisation and structure of academic english sentences. Some strategies are to instruct the learner to repeat so that he corrects himself on his own and to summarise for learning or understanding various structures and vocabulary by paraphrasing.
