How are plant disease classified? And why do we need to classify plant disease?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Mainly plant disease can be classified into two types:

Infectious diseases- these diseases can be spread from one plant to another and the causable agents may be eukaryotes, prokaryotes, parasites, viruses/viroids, Nematodes, protozoa etc.

Non infectious diseases- these disease can not be spreaded from one plant to another and the causable agents include environmental condition, nutritional deficiency etc.

Other classification includes:

On the basis of occurrence: Epidemic, Endemic, Sporadic

On the basis of nature of dispersal medium: Soil borne, Seed borne, Wind borne etc.

On the basis of parts of host affected: Foliage disease, Vascular disease, Stem disease etc

The classification of plant diseases is needed due to:

(i) So that we can get a clear idea about the cause of the disease

(ii) So that the pattern be followed of disease development.

(iii) So that the extent of damage to affected plant can be determined
