What are the differences between cultural pluralism and structural pluralism, and what sorts of tensions might there be between the “cultural” and “structural” identity of African Americans in trying to adapt to American society. In what sense might the concept of marginality be helpful in your discussion?
Cultural pluralism refers to the concept where they maintain their unique cultural identity, values and customs as long as they comply with the laws of the country. Structural Pluralism refers to the concept of political competition among the communities. It’s all about gaining political, economic and social status and power in order to survive. Although most of the African Americans have integrated themselves with the American mainstream culture and society, they also carry their unique customs and cultural elements.
Marginality refers to the prevention of minority groups in a country by denying or making it hard to access facilities, infrastructure, livelihood, employment etc. by the majority. This oppression was largely prevalent for the African Americans but today when look at the progress they had made, it’s tremendous. They have a long way to in some of the earlier colonies where African Americans live in great numbers.
