Solutions

Expert Solution

7. Subway restaurant closely represent a

Product Layout :- This is the correct option because no matter which subway outlet you go the menu remains the same. The taste and ingridents also remains the same. So a person from China can expect the same taste in America. This has been a major factor in distributing its franchise all around the world.

Fixed layout majorly focuses on having the outlet design same all around, but the outlet is different everywhere in case of subway. Continuous layout is more inclined towards batch production and is used in factories, so this option is also not correct. Process layout is a concept used in manufacturing to reduce the cycle time, hence this option is also not correct.

8. The process of assigning the activities to various workstations such that idle time of each work station is minimized is

d. Line Balancing - This is the correct option as the concept of line balancing focuses on making each workstation having same workload and same time so that there is contineous production and idle time is reduced.

Productivity management is a much broder concept and we can say line balancing is a part of productivity management, but there are other factors also involved in productivity managemnet like automation, outsourcing, etc. Man-machine interaction is a concept used in automation where the interface between man and machine is kept at minimum, hence this is also not correct option. Capacity planning involves layout planning and output planning, it does not involves idle time working, here it is assumed that the workstation time is constant and the design is made accordingly, hence it is not correct option.

9. An automobile paint shop will benefit the most with

a. continuous layout : paint shop process involves many steps like cleaning, degreasing, spraying and blowing. And also it needs some cureing time for the paint to stick to the part. Hence a continuous layout where each step is carried out one after another will be beneficial. Both in terms of output and cost.

Fixed layout is more where the product is kept constant and each worker has to do and perform the job, that is difficult as the time required to complete the work will be more. Process layout is more of a concept where the cycle time is studies and optimized. Product layout is more inclined towards the product portfolio and the features, so there options are not correct.

10. Which of the following is considered the most important while designing a retail store layout?

b. In store flow of traffic- This is the major factor considered as the design of store should be sufficient so that people can accomodate easily and there is no rush or waiting. A number is estimated and the design is made based on that only. The gandway width, rack spacing, parking all are based on the estimate of how many people will come to the store.

Influencing the customer attitude is more of survey kind of thing where the customer retaintion and improvement points are implemented. Hence it is not the correct option.Reducing the billing time is also not correct as it can be changed to new and efficient software after the store layout have been finalized. Degree of customer satisfaction is a performance indicating factor hence it is not the correct option.

Chemical species A, B, C, D and E are involved in a reaction. They may represent reactants, products, intermediates, catalysts or inhibitors. The rate of change in the concentration for each of them is given below: d[A]/dt = -k1[A][B] + k-1[C][B] + k2[C][D] - k-2[A][E] d[B]/dt = 0 d[C]/dt = k1[A][B] - k-1[C][B] - k2[C][D] + k-2[A][E] d[D]/dt = -k2[C][D] + k-2[A][E] d[E]/dt = k2[C][D] - k-2[A][E] a) Write down the elementary steps in the proposed reaction mechanism that are...

The following reactions take place in a batch reactor: A+B--> C (desired product) B+C-->D (hazardous product) As the reaction proceeds, D builds up in the reactor and could cause an explosion if its concentration exceeds 15 mol/L. To ensure the safety of the plant personnel, the reaction is quenched (e.g., by cooling the reactor contents to a low temperature) and the products are extracted when the concentration of D reaches 10mol/L. The concentration of C is measured in real-time, and...
