What does the Tao-te Ching influence, and reveal about the Chinese civilization?
Tao-te Ching influenced the Chinese civilization through its word of wisdoms. Later it shaped Taoism in China which reflect the people's understanding of their place in the universe and their obligation to each other. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration.
What is the main philosophy behind it?
The Tao-Te-Ching is an anti-authoritarian treatise which posits that the way of virtue lies in non-action (Wu Wei) through a recognition of the natural, universal force known as the Tao. Its main philosophy is: being super judge of everybody else is a terrible way to go through life. Nurture everything there is, whether it's a bad thing or a good thing and you will yourself know from experience what to leave or refrain.
How does the thoughts still apply today?
Tao Te Ching translates very roughly as "the way of integrity". In its 81 verses it delivers a treatise on how to live in the world with goodness and integrity: an important kind of wisdom in today's world where many people believe such a thing to be impossible.
