  • Frictional losses: Since oil is a highly viscous fluid, there is lot of loss of power as friction between the falls of the pipe. This increases the required for pumping due to lower pressure drops. This is the most important hindrance to flow of oils in and gases in pipelines. As very low pressure drop, can result in vaporisation of the oil and corroding and damage of the pipes.
  • Deposition of residual fluids which corrodes the pipe and hampers flow. Requires "pigging". This can actually reduce the amount of actual diameter available for flow reducing the flowrate and hence, increasing the pressure losses. Refer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigging
  • Proper controls to detect leakage of gases. Flarring lines have to be provided
  • To avoid any potential sources for ignition
  • The nature of the terrains in which the pipes have to be laid can also pose a difficulty. For example, it maybe difficult to build pipelines in hilly regions.
  • Pressure relief valves have to be installed and periodically checked.
