(go to "Opinion Announcement," which is a seven minute audio clip on the court's decision on the Snyder v. Phelps case), briefly summarize the facts of the Snyder v. Phelps (2011) case. By using facts presented, clearly explain why the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church. Then, tell us why you agree/disagree with the Court’s decision.
Fred Phelps and his followers at the Westboro Baptist Church believe that God punishes the United State for its tolerance of homosexuality. particularly within tje military. To demonstrate their beliefs, Phelps and his followers often picket at military funerals.
Albert Synder's son, Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, was killed in the line of duty in irag in 2006. Westboro picketed Matthew Snyder's funeral displaying signs that stated, for instance,"God Hate the USA/Thank God for 9/11.'' ''Thank God for Dead Soliders,'' and ''Don't Pray for the USA.'' The Church notified local authorities in advance that they intended to picket the funeral, staged the picket on public land adjacent to the public street, and complied with all police instruction. Church members also sang hymnsand recite Bible Verses.
Yes, I agree with the court decision by the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church, as Westboro Baptist Church's picketing at fallen soldier's funerals ''is certainly hurtful and its contribution to public discourse may be negligible.'' But said the reaction may not be "punishing the speaker."
