Have you had anything for breakfast today?

  1. Select a population from which you will sample to perform a hypothesis test related to your question. Describe the members of this population.

I will ask 40 people as they are walking onto campus on a normal Thursday at 11am if they had anything for breakfast that day.

  1. Make a hypothesis about the proportion of yes responses that you expect to find. I suggest that you make the hypothesis that the proportion is less than 50%, or that the proportion is greater than 50%. Do not hypothesize that the proportion will equal a certain value. You are setting yourself up to not accept your hypothesis if you do.

I believe that at less than 50% will say that they had breakfast.

H₀: p=0.5

H₁: p<0.5

  1. Ask a sample of at least 40 people the question and record their responses.

Yes: 18

No: 22

  1. Perform a hypothesis test to determine if p is significantly higher or lower than 50%. You may let α = 0.05. Be sure to state the p-value for your test.
  2. Comment on the significance of your conclusion as it relates to the question you asked.
  3. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of “yes” responses.
  4. Comment on the meaning of the interval you found.

Suppose that you have a random sample of size n from a population with Gamma density with α= 3 but unknown β. Write down the likelihood function, and find a sufficient statistic.
