It was recently announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will extend its regulatory authority to E-cigarettes, tobacco pipes, and cigars. They have proposed a ban of these products to those under 18 (in person and Internet sales), those purchasing these products must show identification, a ban on use in public places, and products must include warning labels. The producers of cigars and e-cigarettes must register with the FDA, provide a detailed accounting of their product ingredients, disclose their manufacturing processes and scientific data, and would be subject to FDA inspections. Many have argued that the FDA oversight will close the smaller producers. They argue that innovations to these products will be significantly slowed down due to these regulations. The regulations will also increase their costs--application costs, user fees, creating scientific costs will force the smaller producers to close down or merge with the larger producers (many are the tobacco industry). OTC drugs are those drugs that we can buy without the medical prescription. They are regulated by FDA.
Any OTC must include doses, ingredients, and labelling.
On the other hand, tobacco is also under the regulation of FDA since 2009 after Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act passed by Congress.
According to my view, we cannot compare OTC drugs to tobacco because tobacco is not an over the counter drug and there are several products that contain tobacco as an ingredient.
It is true fact that use of tobacco is very harmful and it is one of the main cause of death not only in the U.S but across the globe.
In order to reduce the health hazard and death due to tobacco use. The government should regulate the limit of usage of tobacco. It is a proven fact that tobacco is a carcinogenic material (class A).
In order to reduce passive smoking it is very necessary to impliment ban and fine for smoking in public places.
