Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) are most advanced materials used in the aerospace manufacturing. Conventional Ceramics are brittle and and have low crack resistence. Therefore these conventional ceramics are reinforced with continuous length ceramic fiber to increase the crack resistence. The fiber is used to increase the CMC stress for the progress of micro-cracks through the matrix and to proivde the CMC with a high ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The common fibers used in manufacture of CMC's are: Carbon (C), special silicon carbide (SiC) and alumina (Al2O3)

1. Properties of CMC composites are:

a)High crack resistence or fracture toughness. Crack resistence is the resistence offered against high temperature and impact.

b)High Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS). UTS is the maximum strength that a material can withstand when subjected to maximum pull or push.

2. Same as above.

3.The Engineering technology used in the manufacture of CMC's are

a)Matrix forming via pyrolysis:Pyrolysis is the thermal decomposition of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere. To manufacture a CMC material, the fiber preform is infiltrated with the chosen polymer and subjected to Pyrolysis.

b) Matrix formed via Sintering.Sintering  is the process of compacting and forming a solid mass of material by heat or pressure without melting it to the point of liquefaction. This process is used to manufacture oxide fiber matrix CMC materials.

4. The various applications of CMC materials are:

  • Manufacturing of heat shield systems for space vehicles which during the re-entry phase withstand high temperatures, thermal shock conditions and heavy vibrations.
  • Parts of gas turbines such as combustion chambers, stator vanes and turbine blades which withstand high temperatures.
  • Brake disks and brake system components, which experience extreme thermal shock.

1. Consider our most recent recession. Suggest an appropriate monetary policy intervention to remedy the situation. Explain how the Fed will carry out this intervention (suggest a specific tool and how it can be used), and what the actions of the banking system will (may) e after the Fed's intervention. How will this affect the AD, what will be the effects on inflation and unemployment.
