You work for Mike, a global company that specializes in manufacturing and selling athletic shoes for both competition athletes and casual users. You are called into your supervisor’s office where he tells you that you have been assigned to be the leader of a virtual team. The team has been tasked with assessing the feasibility of the company manufacturing and marketing an inexpensive athletic shoe to be sold in Brazil. You will be responsible for getting the team up and running, maintaining open and clear lines of communications, and ultimately launching the product if it is found to be feasible.
Your supervisor hands you a list of the team members—twelve of them. Three work in the United States (two in Beaverton, Oregon, and one in New York City). Two work in England, two in China, two in India, and three in Brazil. All are Mike employees, and all were born in the country in which they work. All speak English, though some speak it better than others.
Since you are team’s leader, your supervisor has asked you to meet with the members and then prepare a written report that addresses the following:
1. The main challenge the team might face is its own internal coordination. Since, the members are from 5 different countries, each one of them from different culture. The thought process will be different for each of them. Moreover, there could also be an accent issue within the team. As accent of Indian and Chinese is not as compatible with those of US and England. It will be a huge task for Mike to bring the coordinated work out of the team.
2. To help team overcome these challeneges, each one has to be motivated in order to get the best out of them. The work division has to be done very carefully, a team member should a task that lies in his strong zone. Also, tasks should be assigned such that team members get to interact more and more with other memebers from different nationalities, it will help them bond professionally.
3.The opportunities provided by such kind of makeup are large. It lets the team members aware of work culture and tradition of other places. He gets to learn the thought process of others and also share his own. The best praactices of work over different places can be studied and then exclled in. It provides a very wide perspective to the situation. When a problem is raised, you'll get multiple approaches to its solution due to this diversity in the team.
