In: Operations Management
Scenario: Top management brings in a policy that all the
concerned employees need to be consulted in the upcoming training
programs.
What learning theory (e.g. reinforcement theory, needs theory,
social learning theory, goal setting theory, expectancy
theory)
How can trainers use this learning theory effectively in training?
(e.g. chunking – breaking training modules into parts, setting
specific, challenging goals, inform trainees the benefits of
training etc)
The learning theory being discussed in this case is the needs-based theory. The training programs must be designed to cater to the needs of employees. For this purpose, the trainers must consult with the respective managers, identify the training needs of the employees, what are the knowledge gaps. Then, design a training module which would resolve these gaps and improve employee skills and knowledge. This would result in improved performance and the productivity with increase. In addition to this, the training program would be completely and certainly useful and would be an investment worth making.
Also, it must be noted that trainings must be structured properly. i.e. not only conducting the presentation is important, but informing trainees, providing them the schedule and topics. Finally the evaluation tests must be conducted to realise the effectiveness of the training module. Improvement must be done regularly to increase the effeciency of the training program/s.
Provide employees with goals or targets to achieve. These goals must be SMART (i.e. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound). The fair and transparent performance management system will act as a motivator to the employees.
