Question text
Intercultural communication may come naturally for Lance, an
American student who is studying abroad in Israel. Communicating
for Abe, a student from Portugal may be a bit more difficult. Abe's
culture doesn't like to discuss personal events so when Lance sees
that Abe is quiet he isn't exactly sure why.
Lance's professor assigned a project on the cacao industry in
Africa, Serefina and Fallon were assigned to Lance's group. Without
any knowledge of African culture, Lance was anxious about
completing the assignment. He thought that he knew enough to write
out his paper. Ella, Lance's friend recently came back from Africa
on a service mission trip. In a conversation, she told Lance that
he may view and mentioned that she watched this 'YouTube video on
Child Labor: The Dark Side of Chocolate'. Lance took Ella up on her
offer to watch the video and was surprised by what he learned. This
is an example of:
Select one:
a. Letting go of ethnocentric beliefs
b. Interviewing individuals on culture

Fallon was excited to learn more about African culture and the
cacao industry. An avid M&M eater, she was shocked to learn how
many child laborers there were in Africa, some as young as 7 years
old were observed in the video with a machete cutting the pods off
the cacao tree. Fallon was so disgusted that she never ate a piece
of commercial chocolate again, only free-trade consumption moving
forward. Fallon became so involved in ending child labor that she
verbally assaulted her classmates when she observed them eating
Nestle, Cadbury, and Mars candy in class. What could account for
Fallon's behavior? Choose all that apply.
Select one:
a. Ethnocentrism
b. Privilege
c. Education on culture
d. Cultural bias
e. All of the above
1. All of the above
Lance's interpretation of Africa was based upon what he perceived and thought without giving any importance to the actual scenario. Hence while completing the assignment, Lance must let go of ethnocentric beliefs, learn the importance of interviewing the individuals to get an idea about the true scenario and also educate himself on intercultural communication.
2. Serefina felt that Ella, Lance's friend, was a missionary and she was not studying in a sophisticated college like theirs. Her recommendation could not be taken seriously.
This is what was felt by Serefina who thought that watching that video won't be of any help since she considered the source of that video, i.e. Ella not to be sophisticated and considered her to be not adding any value to their assignment.
3. All of the above
Fallon was highly influenced by the treatment of children in Africa and how their culture promoted child labour which made her disgusted. She was educated about their culture, learnt about ethnocentricism, cultural bias and privilege provided to their own culture which made her feel and act in that particular manner.
