What implications do the biological and psychodynamic models of abnormality have on our current and future understanding of abnormality?
Biological model of understanding abnormality is based on the basic hypothesis that there are changes in the chemical, neuroanatomy, neurotransmitter due to which psychological changes occur leading to abnormality. So everything is more of biological that based on the circumstances or situations an individual faced in their lives.
This makes the traetment of mental disorders more of biological sciences than based on psychodynamics thus currently many advances have been made in various drugs and medications which are now available for treatment. The treatment is becoming more effective and person can resume his job and activities as early as possible.
In future biological basis will help in knowing more about the genetics and thus very specific drugs for treating a particular genetic defect that is leading to mental abnormality.
On the other hand psychodynamic model is based more on the psycholgical factors, the psycholgical stress or conflicts an individual faces in their life for a long time leading to abnormality. It needs a lot of experience and expertise to analyse the conflicts and takes a long time for traetment based on this model to work. It cannot work in certain abnormalities where in patient is aggressive, uncontrollable, not oriented has lost his judgement. There are certain limitations and so this model of abnormality was soon replaced by other models. In future too psychodynamic model will have a very limited role in treating abnormalities.
