In: Statistics and Probability
use the data collected from the 2012 General Social Survey (GSS)
in which 1,298 respondents reported on the number of hours they
watched tv per day. The results show that the average (mean) number
of hours spent watching tv per day is 3.089 hours with a standard
deviation of 2.87 hours.
3.) Calculate a 95% confidence interval to estimate the mean number
of hours of tv the average American watches per day. Interpret this
in English. what does this mean?
3)
Solution :
Given that,
Point estimate = sample mean = = 3.089
Population standard deviation = = 2.87
Sample size = n = 1298
Z/2 = Z 0.025 = 1.96
Margin of error = E = Z/2* ( /n)
= 1.96 * (2.87 / 1298)
= 0.156
At 95% confidence interval estimate of the population mean is,
- E < < + E
3.089 - 0.156 < < 3.089 + 0.156
2.933 < < 3.245
A 95% confidence interval to estimate the mean number of hours of tv the average American watches per day is 2.933 to 3.245 .
