Managers need and benefit from a logical model to guide execution decisions and actions. Without guidelines, execution becomes a labyrinth. Business strategy is essential to the successful execution of corporate strategy. Poor strategic performance at the business level detracts from corporate’s ability to achieve its strategic aims, while good performance helps make corporate strategy work.

Managers cannot create coordination mechanisms or integrate strategic and short-term operating objectives if job responsibilities and accountability are unclear. Being an effective global leader means having the willingness and ability to thrive outside of our habitual comfort zones. Global businesses have operations, partners, alliances and senior managers representing virtually every global region. Many have more than one “headquarters,” signaling the diversity of their thinking and perspective.

There are certain set of competencies for an effective global manager which includes

A management mindset not only help to recognize when it is beneficial to create a consistent global standard, but also deepen the understanding of local and cultural differences, crossing cultures and changing contexts. It helps to simultaneously recognize the situations in which demands from both global and local elements are compelling, while combining an openness to and awareness of diversity across cultures and markets with a willingness and ability to synthesize across this diversity.

One of the basic decisions in global strategy begins by considering just how much local variation, if any, there might be for a brand. The primary strategy is to effectively utilize the corporate management resources, such as personnel and technology, in accordance with external environmental factors such as competition and customer needs.

A firm using a strategy to provide the responsiveness to local requirements within each of its markets in favor of emphasizing efficiency. Some minor modifications to products and services may be made in various markets, but a global strategy stresses the need to gain economies of scale by offering essentially the same products or services in each market.
