Heavenly Dog eating the Sun
As an astronomy lover, there is no way for you to miss the partial solar eclipse.
(a) It is not safe to observe the eclipse with your naked eyes. Why?
(b) Unfortunately, you do not have the right solar filter to do the observation. You will project the image onto a piece of paper instead. You expect to see some sunspots on the image. Which scientist discovered sunspots, and what was the implication of the discovery?
(c) Your foreign friend has promised to send you his photos of the total solar eclipse. Why is the total eclipse viewable at his city but not yours?

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a) Like a camera lens, your pupils dilate, or open, in darkness to allow in more light. During the eclipse, the overall sunlight will be dimmed which dilates your pupil For example, Same thing happens in night(dark room) and somebody turns on light, you feel like you can't see anything properly for few moments but if such light source is as powerful as sun it is possible that your eye can get permanently damaged.

Hence it isn't safe to look at eclipse with naked eyes. And if you look at the partial eclipse, the portion of the sun that is visible can cause permanent damage to your eyes.

(b) Galileo Galilei discovered sunspots, he identified sunspots correctly as markings on the sun, confirming that the sun rotated monthly, as the position of the spots moved. With the given modern technologies it has been confirmed that the cyclical appearance of sunspots over long and short periods is connected with increased levels of magnetic activity.

(c) At its size and distance, the Moon appears barely large enough to block the Sun during a solar eclipse. As a result, the shadow cast does not cover the entire planet, instead drawing a narrow path of totality. As the shadow covers only small part on earth, hence eclipse isn't visible everywhere at once.
