 Assessment procedures:

 1. Research industry discussion on the ethical and professional practice and issues centred on the areas of rates, professionalism, accuracy, subcontracting and competence.

 2. Select one from the above five areas as the topic of your report.

 3. In your report, discuss the following aspects:

 detailed knowledge of the issues relevant to your topic

 awareness of current issues

 analysis of relevant professional ethical codes and trends

 anticipation of developments and directions in the field

Rates Are unpaid translation tests ethical and should translators agree to do them? . Is it ethical for translation agencies in developing countries to pay translators less than they would receive if they worked for an overseas agency? Is a rate of AU$0.02 per word reasonable to accept? . Should translators who provide low-quality work still be paid? Should I allow a client to refuse to pay me for a translation with just a few errors, when the client knew I was new to the field and agreed to a reduced rate to compensate? . Professionalism Should translators be required by professional associations to pursue continuing education courses? Is it ethical for a translator to accept a large translation project from a client by claiming to be part of a network of qualified translators when in fact this translator will simply post a new job offer on another online translation network to find other freelancers to do the job for him/her? . How should members of online, practice-oriented networks show that they disagree with answers posted in terminology forums while still being ethical? Answer: Translator must improve, maintain and expand their knowledge to provide quality service. To improve and expand knowledge translator can continue pursue educational course but maintain confidentiality, honesty, accountability in the association they are working in.

  • Is it ethical for translator to accept a large translation project from a client by claiming to be a part of a network of qualified translators when in fact this translators will simply post a new job offer on another online translation network to find other freelancers to do the job for him/her?

Answer: No, it is not ethical for any translation network to claim such acceptance as it is unprofessional because the client delegated the work by showing trust and faith in this network. Here the networking associations are showing unprofessional conduct by not maintaining the confidentiality and honesty, and disclosure some material facts which must be maintain between client and network.

  • How should members of online, practice-oriented networks shows that they disagree with answers posted in terminology forums while still being ethical?

  • Be respectful,
  • considerate,
  • wisely choose words,
  • don't make harsh comments,
  • make stronger point and differentiate with the answer that is disagreed
