The following picture represents a sample of gas at a pressure of 1 atm, a volume of 1 L, and a temperature of 25 ?C

What would happen to the pressure if the volume were reduced to 0.4L and the temperature increased to 260?C?

Solutions

Expert Solution

We know that PV = nRT

Where P,V,n,R,T are the pressure , volume , number of moles , gas constant & temperature respectively.

Since the same amount of gas under go volume , pressure & temperature change

Where

P1 = initial pressure = 1 atm

V1 = initial volume = 1 L

T1 = initial temperature = 25 oC = 25 + 273 = 298 K

P2 = final pressure = ?

V2 = final volume = 0.4 L

T2 = final temperature = 260 oC = 260 + 273 = 533 K

Plug these values in the above equation we get

                                                                      P2 = 4.5 atm

Therefore the final pressure is 4.5 atm
