Why is very important to advise people infected with mononucleosis
to stay away from contact sports like football, or any contact
sports?
Mononucleosis:
A viral infection characterised by high fever , fatigue and swollen lymph nodes . The causative agent of Mononucleosis is Epstein - Barr virus. The main mode of transmission is through body fluids , especially saliva. It can spread from person to person through activities like kissing, sharing drinks or utensils, also through the contact with blood and body fluids.
It is very important to advise people infected with mononucleosis to stay away from vontact sports like football because of the possibility of a rare complication of Mononucleosis like Spleenic Rupture . It is a potentially fatal complication of Mononucleosis . Athletes who play foot ball and other contact sports are more prone to abdominal trauma, that can cause Spleenic Rupture , as the there is swelling or enlargement of spleen in mononucleosis. The infected person should abstain from 1 to 6 months from the contact sports to avoid the complication of Spleenic Rupture.
The conditions of increased contraction of diaphragm or intrabdominal pressure in vigorous vomiting, forceful defecation, vomiting also can cause compression on spleen and rupture some times. But it is rare complication that occur only for 0.5 % people .
