Analyze in details on how does Annealing affect metal properties?
material engineering
Answer - First of all we have to know basic definition of annealing. Annealing is a heat treatment process in which some mechanical and electrical properties changes. Mostly we forcus on the ductility, hardness, specific microstructures,a in eliminating internal stresses.
Why go for annealing- When cold working is not sufficient for desired properties and we get crack if we further go for cold working then this heat treatment process is used.
Mechanism - Annealing deals with microstructures of the alloys or metals. We have studied about the phase diagrams. In phase diagram we can see the changes occurs in microstructures at different different temperatures, even for same compositions of alloys. Annealing is done in 3 stages. 1- Heating the material upto the desired temperature. 2- holding time 3- cooling which is generally done till the room temperature achieved.
In annealing process we heat the material above its recrystallization temperature and then we hold for some time which is known as holding time. This holding time changes for different materials. For particular material optimum holding time is given for proper treatment. Now we cool down the heated material in this step new grains are formed and these new formed grains posses very less number of dislocations. Because of that hardness of the alloys or material decreases and ductility increases. Due to decrease in number of dislocations internal stresses are reduced.
