Think about water. Think about how it is tied in with waste and vector borne diseases. Humans have been using water as a way for disposing waste for centuries! Vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing more than 1 million deaths annually. We take water so much for granted yet it is many times the source of many public health issues. Give an example of why we need to be concerned with vector-borne diseases and what progress we are making (or not.)

  • Vectors are living organisms that can transmit infectious pahogens between humans, or from animals t humans.Many of these vectors are bloodsucking insects, which ingest disease- producing microorganisms.

Vector-borne disease

  • Vector-borne disease are human illnesses caused by parasites, viruses and bacteria that are transmitted by vectors.Every year there are more than 700,000 deaths from diseases such as malaria, dengue, schistosomiasis, human african trypanosomiasis, yellow fever etc.,
  • Since 2014, major outbreaks of dengue, malaria, chickungunya, yellow fever have afflicted populatiins, claimed livesin many countries.
  • Vector-borne diseases are considered the most serious, since ther are unpredictable ande very difficult to preventor control it.
  • Types of Vectors :
  1. Mosquitoes
  2. Flies
  3. Ticks
  4. Bugs
  5. Snail carrying parasites

Precautions for protection against Disease - Vectors :

  • By using proper insecticides
  • Putting on long sleeved wears and covering legs at places where insects exists.
  • Using mosquito nets.
  • Covering water tanks.
  • Changing water at ridges every two days, cleaning them from inside.
  • Elminating water at water drainage channels at roofs and gardens.
  • Make sure to cover toilet lid, water drainage openings and gutters.
  • Maintaining personal hygiene constantly and using clean water for drinking and bathing.
