Water borne diseases are caused by drinking, washing, bathing in unsafe water. These diseases are due to viruses and bacterias which are microscopic organisms and often found in contaminated water and feces. These diseases can be prevented by maintaining sanitation and hygiene and using only safe water. Some of the major water borne diseases are:
Typhoid fever:
Rare in industrialized and developed economies but occurs prominently in developing or poor countries. It is caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene. It is very contagious.
Symptoms: constipation or diarrhea, fever, muscle pain, fatigue, sweating etc.
Prevention and treatment:
Antibiotics, vaccines, good sanitation and hygiene
cholera: mainly occurs in marginalized, poverty stricken and poor areas. Hours of exposure to bacteria found in contaminated water cause serious dehydration problems and diarrhea.
Symptoms: nausea, doardiar, vomiting, muscle aches.
Prevention and treatment:
Washing of hands with soap and clean water, eating cooked food, eating self peeled vegetables
giardia: caused by contaminated water mainly in streams, ponds, swimming pools and even in public water supplies. It is caused by parasite and people exposed to it may develop intestinal problems in the yaers to come.
Symptoms: diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, abdominal pain, cramps etc.
Prevention and treatment:
No vaccines available, so drink and cook in clean water, often wash hands with soap, donot drink water from streams, ponds and swimming pools while swimming. Our own immune system beats giardia but sometimes doctors prescribe antibiotic and antiparasitic medicines.
Dysentery: often caused by viruses, parasites, bacterias. Mainly occurs due to poor sanitation and hygiene. A lot of liquid gets discharged from the body which if not replenished in time can be fatal.
Symptoms: diarrhea, fever, cramps, abdominal pain, dehydration, vomiting
Prevention and treatment: while traveling use only bottled and sealed water, wash hands frequently with soap and clean water, avoid using food from street vendors. Some available medications can be taken.
Hepatitis A:
Caused by unsafe and contaminated water and food cooked in that water. Caused by raw food. Affects liver.
Symptoms: vomiting, bowel movements, fatigue, nausea, sudden fever, loss of appetite etc.
Prevention and treatment: using clean water for use, eating hot and properly cooked food, keeping ourselves clean and hygienic, most effective is taking vaccines.
