Premack's principle suggests that if a high probability behaviour that leads or desirable outcome, is made contingent upon a low probability and less desirable behaviour, then the less desirable behaviour will be performed more frequently. In other words, the Premack principle provides support for a feature of operant conditioning where activities may themselves be reinforcers. Thus for instance, many of my classmates have shared that their parents promise to buy them a desirable object app such as an x-box, a new laptop/PC, a vacation out or a dress if they get a high grade in a difficult subject at the end of the academic year. Thus, the motivation to get the desirable reward here demands doing a less desirable activity. As a result, studying for exams becomes the activity which reinforces the more desirable activity like playing video games, or going out on a vacation or for shopping. As students will get more motivated to study if we knows that we will partake in a more desirable activity as a consequence.
