If it is a hot day and the swamp cooler isn't working, if one were to open their refrigerator door to cool the house down, would it work? Please give an explanation that pertains to thermodynamics.

In hot and humid areas, swamp coolers don’t work. Those places use heat pumps and dump the heat into pipes that are buried in the ground. Underground, the temperature is considered constant all year, assume 55 °F. What will be the improvement in terms of energy efficiency with this arrangement, as opposed to using a conventional air conditioner? Assume the house is to be maintained at 70 °F and the outside temperature is 95 °F. Calculate the energy required per BTU of heat removed from the house, for these two arrangements, heat pump versus air conditioner.

Please show your work. Thank you so much !

One of the “hot buttons” regarding COPD is the attempt to minimize the number of 30-day readmissions. What has your institution done in this area? What programs or procedures would you suggest to minimize this issue? How would you implement them? Why?

In class we showed that hot air at atmospheric pressure is less dense than cooler air at the same pressure. Because of this difference hot-air balloons can stay aloft. Assume that you have an air-balloon that has the volume of 500 m3 and the surrounding air is at 100C. You want to lift 250 kg object (in addition to the mass of the hot air that is inside the balloon). What must be the temperature of the air in the...

A store is about to close for the day, and you are the only one working there. The order is that you only close the store when all the clients are gone. There are still two (unrelated) clients in the store, and the time each stays in the store is modeled by an exponential random variable. We estimate that it would take in average 10 minutes for a client to exit the store. (a) Model the time spent by the...

Some of the green thumbs were talking one day and determined that there were about 4 factors that had a significant impact on the growth of a plant during any one phase. These factors are: 1) Temperature 2) Water 3) Fertilizer 4) Carbon Dioxide Level. The green thumbs thought that at least two of these factors interacted with each other, so they wanted to design an experiment to test the effects of these factors on the growth of the azaleas....

You are a researcher working in a molecular laboratory. One day, you need to run a batch of PCRs. You assembled the reagents including Taq polymerase, made the reaction mixtures, and ran them in a thermocycler. After the PCR program ran to completion, you performed a gel electrophoresis to check the quality of the PCR product. To your dismay, all reactions appeared to have failed! Nothing showed up on the gel. You reviewed the thermocycler’s log, which displayed the following...
