DEFINITION: REHABILITATION IS A TREATMENT OR TREATMENTS WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE FACILITY TO VARIOUS PEOPLE FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECOVERING FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE INJURY OR MENTAL SICKNESS AND HELPS THEM TO BRING BACK TO NORMAL.

THE AIM OF REHABILItATION IS TO MAXIMISE THE POTENTIAL TO RESTORE A PERSON WHO HAS AN IMPAIRMENT,OR AN INCAPACITY FOR SERVICE OR WORK AS A RESULT OF SERVICE INJUIRY OR DISEASE TO AT LEAST THE SAME PHYSICAL AND PSYChOLOGICAL STATE AND AT LEAST THE SAME SOCIAL VOCATIONAL AND EDUCATION STATUS AS HE OR SHE HAD BEFORE THE INJURY OR DISEASE.

THE main focus of rehabilitation is reducing the human and economic cost of disability for ADF members former members their families and broader community.

The first goal to be esyablished is the strategic aim of a rehabilitation program.This can vary significantly .

For some a long term goal would be retuning to their normal lifestyle.For others it may be return home and stay at home with the help of caregivers.The inpatient rehabilitation hospital has a very specific role to play in accelerating the return of the patient to a community living setting.Unlike alternative institutional rehabilitation providers the inpatient rehabilitation facility is capable of providing a brief intense coordinated plan of interventions specific to overcoming the barriers to discharge home.

As well as providing a structure setting appropriate goal provides the motivation required for sucess.Some important aims defined could be rebuilding social connectedness to family and community and learning to undrestand and self manage physical and mental health conditions to the best of the persons ability.it helps in assisting the person to return to safe and meaningful worl at the earliest possible time to minimise the further harm to physical and mental health and wellbeing through leng trem absence from employment and reducing the human and econommic cost of disability.

PRECATIONS:

Rehabilitation should be carried out only by qualified therapists.Exercises and other physical interventions must take into account the patients deficit.(eg. deficit is the loss of a limb.)

A proper and adequate rehabilitaion program can reverse many disabiling conditions or can help patient cope with deficits that cannot be reversed by medical treatment.

Rehabilitation addresses the patients physical , psycological,and environmental needs,It is acheived by restoring the patients physical functions and social environment.The main types of rehabilitation are physical occupational, and speech therapy.Each program is tailored to the individual needs and can include one or more types of therapy.The patients physician usually coordinates the efforts of the rehabilitation team, which can include the physical, occupational ,speech and other therapist.

Starting rehabilitation as soon as practicable after an injury or on the request of an injured employee sets an example of early return to wrok.In most cases this leads to better return to work outcomes and reduces the human and financial costs associated with workers compensation claims or other forms of leave.

Employers may becpme of aware of the employees injury through:

any notification of a workplace injury

any request by an employee for a rehabilitation assessment

identification of any barriers to successful rehabilitation or return to work

other factore such as previous injury etc

once aware of the injury a person must be provided with the rehabilitation as soon as possible:

non compensable rehabilitation assessment and program for example an empoyees injury in the course of their employment

rehabilitation assessment and program under sections 36 and 37 of the SRC Act for example an employees injury is suffered or incurred in the course of their employment.

Either of the above can be provided by the employer.
