Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer-

1) False statement is- D) Niclosamide would be used to treat fungal infections.

Niclosamide is an oral antihelminth drug. Helminths are phyla under invertebrates. This drug is used to treat tapeworm infections.

2) An anti HIV drug is D) Indinavir.

Indinavir is known as protease inhibitor. It inhibits HIV viral protease enzyme which prevents the cleavage of gag-pol polyprotein. This results in noninfectious viral particles.

Amphotericin B is used for fungal infection. Chloroquine is antimalarial drug. Metronidazole is an antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infection in various organ.

3) Amphotericin B blocks mycolic acid synthesis and would be effective against Mycobacteria. - FALSE.

Mycolic acid is an important component of Micobacterial cell wall. Amphotericin B binds to ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane. It thus creating pores in the cell membrane which causes leakage of ions across membrane, leads to cell teath.

4) Streptomycin effect bacteria by blocking ribosomes ability to produce proteins.- TRUE.

Streptomycin is an antibiotic which is also known as protein synthesis inhibitor. It binds to the 16S rRNA of 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome, interfering with tRNA binding. This leads to inhibition of protein synthesis.
