Article: Napping on the Night Shift: A
Two-Hospital Implementation Project.
The article discusses sleepiness issues with the nurses who work
on the night shift and benefits of scheduled naps as an effective
counter-measure. The article describes the results of a napping
implementation project that was conducted in two hospitals.
Analysis methods used:
- Karolinska Sleepiness Scale - a nap experience form to assess
- pre-nap sleepiness levels
- nap duration
- perceived sleep experience
- post-nap sleep inertia
- perceived helpfulness of the nap
- Descriptive statistical parameters used:
- Standard deviation of the measured continuous variables like
nap duration
- Average or mean values
- Mean KSS score
In a case-control study, causes of sleepiness issues are
investigated after the occurrence of a sleepiness issues.
Advantages of using hospital of napping on the night shifts
people controls in case-control studies include:
- As the hospital records of the napping on the night shift
people are readily available which contains all the information, the
findings can be obtained quickly.
- Only minimal funding will be needed as the study takes place in
a hospital where the napping on the night shift people under study
stay in the same premises. This will reduce the cost of travel.
- The study is conducted on a napping on the night shift
people, using hospital patients as control is very efficient, as it
helps to study diseases which have long latency period between
exposure and napping on the night shift people manifestation.
- When exposure data is expensive or hard to obtain this method
of using hospital patients is very useful as data is easily
available for these napping on the night shift peoples.
- The follow-up of the study becomes easy when using hospital of
napping on the night shift peoples as it reduces the time and
travel needed to find the subjects under study.
Disadvantages of using hospital of napping on the night shift
peoples as controls in case control studies include:
- One cannot generate a proper incidence data because the
population under study is limited to those in the hospital
only.
- There can be selection bias when selecting control group.
- If the record keeping of the hospital of napping on the night
shift peoples involved in the study is either inadequate or
unreliable it will become difficult to conduct the study.
- the selection of controls(hospital of napping on the night
shift peoples) can be difficult, depending on whether the patient is
willing to participate or not.
