A waste gas stream

containing 5.5% ammonia in air is being stripped of the bulk of the ammonia by absorbing it in water in a tray tower. The liquid to gas ratio on a molal basis is known to be 2.5. Both the inlet gas and inlet water streams enter at 25oC. The inlet and outlet gas streams may be assumed to be saturated with water vapour. During operation a thermocouple in the outlet liquid stream measures a temperature of 35.2oC.

a)Calculate the mole fraction of ammonia on the outlet gas stream and hence the percentage recovery of ammonia in the column

b)Determine the number of ideal stages required for this separation

Data:Heat of Solution= 37000kJkmolNH3-1

Specific Heat of Water= 75kJkmol-1oC-1

Equilibria: In the equation y=mx,

25oC m=0.97

30oCm=1.22

35oCm=1.53

A chemical plant produces an ammonia-rich waste gas that cannot be released as-is into the environment. One method to reduce the ammonia concentration in the waste gas is to bubble the waste gas through a liquid solvent. Components of the gas that are highly soluble, like ammonia, will dissolve into the liquid phase. Water is an appropriate liquid solvent for this process. The chemical plant produces 125.0 m3/hr of waste gas (ρ = 0.0407 mol/L) initially having a mole fraction...

A fuel gas containing methane and ethane is burned with air in a furnace, producing a stack gas at 300.°C and 105 kPa (absolute). You analyze the stack gas and find that it contains no unburned hydrocarbons, oxygen, or carbon monoxide. You also determine the dew-point temperature. (a) Estimate the range of possible dew-point temperatures by determining the dew points when the feed is either pure methane or pure ethane. (b) Estimate the fraction of the feed that is methane...

Ammonia gas enters the reactor of a nitric acid plant mixed with 30% more dry air than is required for the complete conversion of the ammonia to nitric oxide and water vapor. If the gases enter the reactor at 75 ◦ C (167 ◦ F), if conversion is 80%, if no side reactions occur, and if the reactor operates adiabatically, what is the temperature of the gases leaving the reactor?
