A car is traveling to the right with an initial speed of 20 m/s. The car slows down to a stop in 25 seconds. What is the acceleration of the car?
According to the problem,
The initial speed of the car towards right is U = 20 m/s;
The time in which the get slow down is t = 25 second;
As the body is in retardation,
The equation of motion is V = U - (a)(t);
V- the final velocity of the car is equal to zero (because the car comes to stop)
U- the initial velocity of car
a – the acceleration of the car (here it is negative because retardation)
i.e. V = U + at;
0 = 20 - a (25);
a = 20 / 25 = 0.8 m/s2;
so retardation is 0.8 m/s2, the acceleration is -0.8 m/s2;
Hence the acceleration of the car is a = - 0.8 m/s2;
Hence the solution to the problem.
