Discuss the relationship of monitoring work and site remediation which are needed for groundwater flow as a transport of contaminants.

For vadose zone soil water budget, present a conclusion of the THREE (3) distinct processes in groundwater recharge.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans: Site remediation is nothing but Identification and hazard assessments if suspected contaminated sites with monitoringt the water flow direction. If the rain water is penetrates into the soil and it will become contaminants free water through filatration due to sand and mixed with ground water. This water flows due to gravity. If the site or location is contaminated with chemicals, wastes, etc Then it is necessary of monitoring the work. By the diverting the flow we can able to save the water from pollution with contaminants.

The ground water can be artificially recharged by different techniques they are Infiltration basins, Injection wells, Canals, Deep pits, etc. Of course water in vadose zone is less compared to capillary zone and saturated zone. Vadose zone also called as unsaturated zone where water may come trhough capillary fringe and make the soil wet.

So for better recharge of water, deep pits have dig upto vadose zone and infiltrate the water. The best technique to improve the ground water is 'Rain water harvesting'.

Outline a program of hydrogeological investigations for this site designed to identify potential groundwater flow paths and to assess the likely rate of flow of water into the proposed excavation. In your answer, you should also consider the potential for seasonal variability in groundwater level and explain how this could be evaluated. In your discussion, assume that the groundwater system is unconfined.

The stormwater system of a given site includes the surface overland flow which exits by a rectangular concrete channel to (Manning‘s n = 0.015) drain it. The drainage channel is 100 m long, 20 cm wide, and has a longitudinal slope of 0.6%. The catchment surface of 1950 m2 has an average slope of 0.7%. The site surface is rough asphalt pavement (Manning‘s n = 0.020) and the distance from the upstream catchment boundary to the channel inlet is 100...
