When Japan’s “1955 System” took root in that year, it was thought by many that the Japan Socialist Party (JSP) would get stronger and eventually win general elections. Explain at least two reasons for why observers thought the JSP was in a good position in 1955.
Answer:
Two reasons why observers thought that Japan Socialist Party would
eventually win general elections because of their views on 2 major
issues related to 1946 constitution and Security
Treaty.
1) The 1946 constitution: - This constitution was drafted under the
demand of General Douglas MacArthur. The 1946 constitution was more
of American authorship and with the goal of democratization of
Japan. The conservative parties had the consideration of
constitution revision since its enactment. Also 1946 constitution
aimed at finishing the militarism in Japan.
At the same time, JSP opposed any revision of the
constitution.
2) The security treaty: This Security Treaty was the allowing US to
gain hold of its military in Asia to defeat any communist thread in
cold war. JSP had always oppsed the presence of US military due to
fear of US intervention and revival of militarism and supplying war
equipment’s to Japan
while LDP argued that the presence of the U.S. army in Japan was
merely for self-defense.
