1.Summarize the relationships among topography, climate, rice cultivation, and population density across East Asia.
2.Where is the Three Gorges Dam, why did China build it, and what are the major problems associated with its construction
Answer 1 :-
climate: South china roughly comparable to Carribean, North china similar to couth-central canada. East asia is geologically active (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions). Japan more elongated (but smaller) than Cali; its extreme south is almost subtropical, while north is subarctic. The pacific coast of Japan is seperated from the sea of japan coast by a series of mountain ranges, it is one of most rugged countries with mountainous terrain over 85%, uplands are heavily forested
Taiwans environment: Central and eastern regions are rugged, west is lowland alluvial plain, mild winter climate but has typhoons, extensice forests
Chinese environments: Two main areas, one lies the north of the Yangtze river valley and the other includes Uangtze river and all areas to the south. south has large valleys and moderate elevation plateaus, climate is tropical. the north climate is colder and drier.
Korean landscapes: well defined peninsula, mountainous land with scattered alluvial basins, North Korea heavily deforested, South Korea reforested.
Answer 2 :-
The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that crosses the Yangtze river located in Hubei, a landlocked province in central China.
It started because of the devastation floods in the Yangtze drainage basin and was built to reduce the risk of flooding for the growing population downstream. It was also built to generate HEP and diversify China's energy mix from it's dependence on coal and to fuel economic growth.
Around 1.3 million people were displaced by the rising water behind the dam and in total, 13 cities and many more towns and villages have been submerged. The resettlement project was intended to reduce the social and cultural problems associated with migration. However, most of favourable farmland with fertile soils and flat land was already occupied so displaced people were given land with steeper slopes and poorer quality of soils.
