Discuss the state of US shipbuilding. Where are we compared to other countries?
Shipbuilding consists of building ships and other floating vessels. This usually happens in a specialized building known as a shipyard. Shipbuilding and ship repairs, commercial as well as military, are classified as "naval engineering." Boat construction is a related practice to Boat building.
Today, America rates the world's nineteenth for commercial shipbuilding, accounting for around 0.35 per cent of global new construction. 3 In other words, only one third of one per cent of new commercial shipbuilding is taking place in the United States, given the fact that we are the largest economy in the world.
The US marine industry is essentially very different from Europe, Japan and Korea. It's a really different business. The countries developed most modern shipping fleets today and are competing in an international market for orders. The US will not do so.
Large ships are designed by Huntington Ingalls Industries at Newport News Naval Shipyards (Newport News Shipbuilding) and small ships are designed by General Dynamics at Bath Iron Works, Maine.
