FIRST POST
Identify and briefly describe TWO common assumptions of one or more of the following groups: 1) your culture or subculture (these might have to do with desirable professional goals, roles of men and women, values, obligations of citizenship) 2) an organization (a company that you have worked for, the government, the military or some other organization) 3) a political party (Republican, Democrat, Libertarian) 4) a group with a strong position on a controversial issue, like abortion, the death penalty, gun control, national defense 4) a religion (Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism or some other religion---if you choose to describe a common assumption from a religion please do some research and try to describe the assumption accurately to the best of your abilities; some of these assumptions can call for interpretation, folks will not be graded down if they make mistakes or questionable interpretations. These issues may be treated in evaluation of soundness.)
Construct TWO, VALID DEDUCTIVE ARGUMENTS derived from or related to these assumptions. THESE ARGUMENTS MUST BE VALID, BUT DO NOT WORRY IF THEY FAIL TO BE SOUND.
SECOND POST
Evaluate the validity and soundness of THREE ARGUMENTS. These arguments may be your own OR the arguments of another student. IF you evaluate the soundness of the arguments of another student, please be courteous and constructive. Also, evaluate arguments that have not been evaluated yet.
One of the biggest assumptions underlying the Republican Party propaganda is the assumption that the money of citizens should not be concentrated in the hands of the federal government .
Thus a deductive argument based upon this assumption is :
The success of government rests on the proportion of people who are dependent on the government, and how much help they require. Private citizens are able to mange the money spent by them better than the government. Thus, the Republicans claim that a successful government is the one which is a small government an which gives greater control to the private citizens in managing funds.
Another related assumption by the Republicans is that national security is a crucial part of modern nations and governments are an important system which fulfill this role. Based on this assumption , one can formulate the following argument:
Private citizens are not equipped to form independent armies or private court systems. The federal government is constitutionally granted the power to control national defense and monitor revenue collected from international trade. Thus, government control of national defense and courts is a necessary condition in the modern US state.
