In an effort to assimilate with American culture, the groups of Indians including the Cherokees amongst others were encouraged to "convert to Christianity; learn to speak and read English, etc. originally proposed by George Washington, this move was taken up to an extreme level by Andrew Jackson who sought to renew a policy of political and military action for the removal of the Indians from the lands east of the Mississippi River.
