In near the beginning colonial times, correspondents use to send their messages or letters via their friends, merchants, and Native Americans among the colonies. The European practiced the use of coffee houses and taverns as mail stations. Following the same habit, in 1639, the first official notice of mail service in the colonies appeared. The General Court of Massachusetts designated Richard Fairbanks’ tavern in Boston as the official repository of mail brought from or sent overseas. Thus it is considered to be the first post office in Boston—and probably in the first in America, in the home of Richard Fairbanks. It was legally declared on November 6, 1639 as the repository for overseas mail that is United States Postal Service (USPS).

The reason for officially legalizing home of Richard Fairbanks as post office was to prevent the miscarriage of letters; wherein it was the place appointed for all letters which are brought from beyond the seas and he was made responsible to take care that the letters were delivered or sent according to their directions. For doing the same, Richard Fairbanks was allowed to charge1 penny. At the same time he was made answerable for all miscarriages.
