Communication is an exchange of ideas, views, opinions, and messages between two or more people with without using words of mouth.

Characteristics of a Group and its Impact on Communication:-

  1. Physical Environment:- There are various factors that affect group dynamics. The physical environment can set the initial tone of communication within the group. A long, narrow room for a formal meet leaves less room for communication since the members are apart from each other. A roundtable discussion allows for more participation and becomes easy to coordinate with the leader since he or she can maintain eye contact with every person.
  2. Group Size:- A larger group has people with wide range of talent and experience which can lead to healthy discussion and problems solving. At the same time, fewer members have a chance to participate in discussions. It’s the exact opposite case when it comes to small groups
  3. Group Compositions:- A heterogeneous mix of people in the group create cultural diversity and sharing. It brings out ideas and views influenced by the background the person and has room for excellent brainstorming and problems solving discussions.
  4. Norms:- Every group irrespective of size has a code of conduct which defines the acceptable behavior of the group members. It may or may not apply to every member.It is advisable to discuss the norms of the group so that it doesn’t create any discomfort, frustrations or lost momentum in the communication process.

Role of Group Members and its Impact on Communication:-

  1. Task Roles:- A task leader makes sure that the group is focused on the goal by setting agendas, monitoring the communication channel, evaluate ideas and participation from group members. Some may have an opposing view on the task in hand. The task leader needs to communicate clearly align everyone’s efforts toward a common goal.
  2. Social-Emotional Roles:- Such members address the social and emotional needs of the group by maintaining relationships and encourage active participation from each member of the group. They are good listeners who can understand problems faced by members, provide solutions and encourage members to work hard together for a common goal
  3. Procedurals Roles:- There members are responsible for maintaining a code of conduct with the group. The monitor the flow of communication process to make sure that it is in sync with the group objectives.
