Expert Solution

Q1.

Mass deffect

The atomic mass of 51/23 V is 50.94396 amu. Calculate the nuclear binding energy of this

nucleus and the corresponding nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Mass number = 51

No. of protons = 23, then

Neutrons = Mass number – proton number = 51-23 = 28 neutrons are present

Mass of proton = 1.007825

Mass of neutrón = 1.008665

Total mass = 23*1.007825 + 28*1.008665 = 51.422595 amu

The mass defect:

50.94396 -51.422595= -0.478635 amu

b)

Mass = 0.478635 /(6.022*10^23) = 7.94810*10^-25 g or -7.94810*10^-28 kg

Energy released (Einstein E = mC^2)

E = m*C^2 = -7.94810*10^-28 * (3*10^8)^2 = -7.153 *10^-11 J

Nuclear binding energy = E = -7.153 *10^-11 J

Nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Nucleon = neutron + protons = 51

E per nucleon = E / nucleon =(7.153 *10^-11)/( 51) = 1.402*10^-12 J/nucleon

1 MeV = 1.6021773e-13 J

change to MeV

E = 1.402*10^-12 / (1.602*10^-13) = 8.75 MeV

Q2.

Mass deffect

The atomic mass of 107/47 V is 106.905092 amu. Calculate the nuclear binding energy of this

nucleus and the corresponding nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Mass number = 107

No. of protons = 47 , then

Neutrons = Mass number – proton number =107-47 = 60 neutrons are present

Mass of proton = 1.007825

Mass of neutrón = 1.008665

Total mass = 47*1.007825 + 60*1.008665 = 107.887675amu

The mass defect:

106.905092 -107.887675= -0.982583 amu

b)

Mass = 0.982583 /(6.022*10^23) = 1.63165*10^-24 g or -1.63165*10^-27 kg

Energy released (Einstein E = mC^2)

E = m*C^2 = -1.63165*10^-27 * (3*10^8)^2 = -1.46848*10^-10 J

Nuclear binding energy = E = -1.46848*10^-10 J

Nuclear binding energy per nucleon

Nucleon = neutron + protons = 107

E per nucleon = E / nucleon =(1.46848*10^-10)/( 107) = 1.372*10^-12 J/nucleon

1 MeV = 1.6021773e-13 J

change to MeV

E =1.372*10^-12 / (1.602*10^-13) = 8.5642 MeV
