The Great Vowel Shift (GVS) is a well-studied sound change phenomenon which occurred between 1400 and 1600. Describe what occurred in the shift in a couple/few sentences, making reference to specific phones.
o The great vowel shift was one of the changes in the English language pronunciation. There had been major changes that had taken place in southern England. There was a shift in vowel, where there was change in consonant sounds. Some of the sounds became silent, which resulted in the changes in consonant sounds. In the 15th as well as 16th centuries, ere was standardisation of the spellings in English.
Causes could be associated with the increased migration of people from the north of England tO the southeastern regions. This has been followed by Black Death where there occurred mixing of accents that had resulted in a change in the vernacular of the London people. Also, some reasons are considered to be French influx. Also, some had argued that the re was a process of hypercorrecfion as the French prestige was integrated.
