Carbohydrates; Definition, classification, explain each with examples
Carbohydrates are bio-chemical compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. carbohydrates are also called saccharides which means sugar. simple form of carbohydrates called as simple sugar like glucose. animal body utilize simple sugar to obtain energy in the form of ATP. complex form of carbohydrates are starch and cellulose. starch and cellulose are energy source of plant cells. carbohydrates are classified on the bases of number of simple sugar molecule they contains.
1. Monosaccharides:- are made up of only one sugar molecule. mono means one and saccharide means sugar. monosaccharides are simple form of sugar. for example glucose. fructose, galactose
2. Disaccharides:- are the carbohydrates consists of two simple sugar molecule. Di - two, saccharides- sugar for example:- sucrose, lactose, maltose.
3.Oligosaccharides:- are carbohydrates which made up of few monosaccharide molecule (simple sugar). oligo- few, saccharide - sugar. they are made up of 3 to 10 molecule of monosaccharides. for example raffinose, stachyose.
4. Polysaccharides:- are compound which contains many monosaccharide molecules, more than 10 monosaccharide molecules. poly - many, saccharides - sugar, polysaccharides are complex form of carbohydrates. examples :- starch, cellulose.
