A 20g mass of steam at 373k is added to 200g of liquid water at 298k at constant pressure. Write down equations and specify all the parameters needed to calculate dS (entropy) for this process.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given V1 = 20 g ; V2 = 200g ;T1 = 373 K ; T2 = 298 K ; Cv = 3/2 R ; R = 8.314 J/K/mol

S = CP ln (T2/T1) + R ln (V2/V1)

At constant pressure means increase in enthalpy of the system per degree rise in temperature.

                                       Cp - Cv = R

                                   Cp = R + Cv

                                       Cp = 3/2 R + R = 2.5 R = 2.5 (8.314 J/K/mol) = 20.785 J/K/mol

S = (20.785 J/K/mol) ln (298 K/ 373 K) + (8.314 J/K/mol) ln (200g/20g)

       S = (20.785 J/K/mol) ln (0.7989) + (8.314 J/K/mol) ln (10)

  S = (20.785 J/K/mol) (-0.2245)+ (8.314 J/K/mol) (2.3025)

S = - 4.666 J/K/mol   + 19.143 J/K/mol

  S = 23.809 J/K/mol
