  • ANSWER 1.Intersectionality involves interconnectedness between social categorizations such as race, class and gender, regarding overlapping and interdependent systems for discrimination that people face.It says that people are often disadvantaged by multiple sources of oppression: their race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and other identity markers. For example, being a female and belonging to black race are interdependent which tends to create oppression because of which discriminations happen either in workplace, schools or health care etc.
  • In psychology it is important to understand intersectionality since the field of health psychology and school psychology involves this phenomenon.Psychologists sometimes fail to take into account the person as a whole instead primarily focusing on the specific ailment in need of treatment.
  • People are discriminated in mental health treatments based upon their race and cultural backgrounds, which psychologists and other mental health professionals need to have inderstanding about intersectionality to provide care and treatment to patients.
  • They need to be culturally competent to not make discriminations and consider the patient as a whole taking into account their identity makers as well.Race, religion, culture, gender, sexual orientation, social class etc.should not matter when planning and providing treatments.
  • Psychologists should take time to examine the interactive effects of each aspect of a patient’s identity;be it his or her gender, sexual orientation, social class, or race. This will help the psychologists in having an understanding how each patient’s experience has shaped their behavior and the behaviors of those around them.
  • Also, psychologists and other mental health professional of color may be attuned to and be insightful about intersectionality and therefore may be more understandable and comfortable in engaging in social justice advocacy.
  • Even school counselors and authorities should not discriminate among students and allow admissions based on merit rather than race or social class.
