In 2015, the European Commission proposed giving individual member states the right to ban imports of genetically modified fruits and vegetables even if those products are still permotted at the European Union level. If a member state acted to ban such imports, what would be the likely effecy of that policy on world prices and quantities? Would such a ban help deter the production of genetically modified products?
Effect of that policy on world prices and quantities would be as
follows-
1.Higher commodity price- The yield of crops will get reduced
without having gmo traits, prices of the commodities will rise.Corn
prices will increase by 28% and Soyabean prices by 22%.Consumer can
expect the rise in food-prices by 1-2%.
2.Spiral-Because of the low yield of crops, nearly 250000 acres of
forests will be converted to cropland to make up the losses.Because
more land will be needed for the production.
3.Lower yield-If banning all the GMO goods ,there will less
production from the organic farming .Due to which fulfillment of
demand of fruits and vegetables will not be done and there will be
crises for commodities.
Yes,such a ban help deter the production of genetically modified products. And this banning is necessary because it is harming humans, animal health and ecosystem as well creating reduction in plant diversity.Although it is difficult to stop the spreading of GMO crops because they transfer to natural crops areas through means of wind and pollination .Till now 19 out of 27 European countries have fully ban the production of GMO crops. But if the policy is taken care off properly and discuss it's disadvantages with other nations who have backed out, I am sure they would too support the policy.
