We belong to many subcultures such as ethnic subculture, occupational subculture, sport subculture, or organizational subculture. Pick one of the most important subcultures you belong to. It should be an important part of who you are. Identify some values, norms (folkways and/or mores), and symbols that are shared among the members of your subculture. Discuss ethnocentrism of the members of your subculture. Explain why that subculture is important to you.

I am a national level athlete so I consider myself belonging to the sport subculture . It is very distinctive from the common values and norms of the society . There are a number of things in sport subculture which makes it different from others .Let us talk about one by one .

  • Values There are common sets of values which we follow in our culture which generate a sense of belongingness between every athlete .These values include pasion , a common goal , team work , sportsmanship ,and optimism . These values help the team to get integrated together to work for a common goal . The sportsmanship value promotes a healthy spotting culture which involves following some ethical norms .
  • Norms- There are certain norms associated with the sport culture. This involves making a sacrifice for the game , distinction , accepting all kinds of risks involved and play , considering no limits in the progress.
  • Folkways - There are some common folkways in sports culture as . As ij athletic particularly in India the Running track is considered as a sacred entity and is worshipped . This also happens in other sports where the sports fields are often worshipped .
  • Mores- In sports culture mores include no use of drugs or other performance enhancing substances , fair play etc are some examples .

Ethnocentrism is quite prevalent in my subculture as we athletes always try to see the normal people form our athletic point of views as some of the time we see them as unfit human beings consuming bad diets . We try to figure things out through our own cultural perspective . Ethnocentrism als happens sometimes between teammates as we have a diverse pool of athletes .This culture is important to me because it gives me an identity . I am identified as an athlete in the society . I feel like a family and a sense of beliginness towards my sports culture .
